作为正黏病毒科（Orthomyxoviridae）中的一个种类，流感病毒（Influenza Virus）是一种球形，直径为80-120nm的包膜病毒，含有7或8个独立的单股负链RNA基因片段，每个RNA片段分别编码不同的蛋白质，从而发挥相应功能。根据病毒核蛋白（nucleoprotein，NP）和基质蛋白（matrix protein，MP）抗原性的差异，可将流感病毒分为甲型（A）、乙型（B）、丙型（C）和丁型（D)4种病毒株。在这4种类型中，甲型流感病毒是最常见的流感病毒感染株，感染的宿主范围最广，包括人类、其他陆地和海洋哺乳动物、蝙蝠和鸟类。
